Making Hard Work Pay Off

At Bison Mat, we’re a small operation. There’s just a few of us at our shop, and we each wear a variety of hats. No two days are spent exactly the same and not many days are spent doing the same thing all day. We’ll do sales calls while we change out blades in our production equipment. We’ll ship out an order to the West Coast, wrap up some invoicing, and then work together to build out an order of 160 mats. We’ll install software, go to sales meetings, Google things like, “how to fix a forklift,” and sweep the shop floor before we grab a Chipotle bowl for lunch. The point? The work we do is good work…but it also requires versatility. Flexibility. The ability to do things like “roll with the punches” and “stay the course.” It requires flexibility and commitment, being willing to do whatever it takes to get a job done.

How We Make Business Work for Us

If you looked at us on paper, you’d probably wonder if we should be business owners. Don't get us wrong. We like what we do and we love our business, but we didn’t necessarily picture this as something we’d end up doing. On one hand, we have a lot of family members who are business owners and we’ve learned a ton from them. We grew up entrepreneurial. We grew up with responsibility and having to take responsibility for our lives.

But as business owners, we also recognize we don’t necessarily fit into a traditional mold.

Making Your Space Your Space

When it comes to the look you want your workspace to have…the vibe you want it to carry…there is no shortage of opportunities to make it unique. From standard, big-box solutions that drip with the stylings of Swedish minimalism to custom-made, hand-carved pieces from timbers salvaged from an old seaman’s chapel in Nantucket, the possibilities to make your space your own are endless. It comes down to what you want and what you want to spend. It comes down to taste. It comes down to what matters to you and to the work you do or the things you care about.

As you figure out what you want to do with your space, it’s worth asking a few questions:

Our Business...Our Commitment

At Bison Mat, we’re in the business of helping other people succeed. Sounds a bit like a generic tagline; something that could fit a summer camp, a bank, a realtor, a government program. For us, it’s not really a tagline so much as it is a source of clarity and inspiration. Helping other people succeed takes on a rather unique bend that looks a bit different every day and with each interaction. Sometimes it means we’re partnering with a local small business to make sure that their office space is set up with what they need to be productive. Sometimes we’re not selling them our products at all, but are just helping them do the good work they’re committed to. Sometimes it means we’re working with people who are building out a home office or a production area or helping a large company outfit their workspaces. Other times, we’re doing something a little more unconventional, like outfitting a gaming area or protecting wood floors from big dogs with giant claws and paws. Regardless of what we’re doing and who we’re doing it for, our commitment is to something much bigger — and much more meaningful — than the chair mats we produce.
